Which Size Art Will Look Best?
How to measure a wall for new artwork
Measuring for a new artwork properly is the most important factor to ensure your painting or picture fits the wall space well. By choosing the right artwork size, you will ensure the picture looks as beautiful as it should in your room when hung.
Some of the considerations to make are:
- The height of your ceiling
- The length of your wall space
- Where in the room you would like to hang the picture
- Any original features on your wall such as a fireplace or alcove
- Furniture that can obscure the picture, such as a sofa or bed
Once you know the answer to these five points, you will be able to choose the perfect sized artwork for your room. The overall size of your artwork is the only thing that cannot be changed once you decide on a size. When you choose to add a frame to your painting or print, there are many options to customise the artwork to look as you desire.
For example, for a print or painting on paper, you can select to add a mount (passe-partout) if you want a classic, luxurious finish.
When measuring your space, it’s always good to start by measuring from around 20 centimeters from the height of the ceiling down, and 20 centimeters from the top of any furniture (eg. a sofa or bed) or the floor.
This is what we recommend as the maximum overall area available for your new artwork. Then, from this stage you can determine the actual size of the artwork you would like, and remember to take into account the size of the framing.
A simple way to do this is to decide on what you would like the ‘picture size’ to be, which is the size of the painting or print without any framing or bleed/white border (if adding a mount).
Our premium solid wood frames for art prints have a 22mm solid wood profile, so you to measure the overall frame size when hung, you should add an extra 4 centimeters on each side of the picture for framing if you aren’t adding a mat/passe-partout.
Our floating or tray frames which we use for canvas have a 15mm solid wood profile, so remember to allow 3 centimetres on each side to get the final outer dimensions of the framed canvas.
